windpipe Press Release July 29, 2009
Product Leverages New Technology, providing lower cost electrical power with no rotating machinery such as propellers or turbines.
Boulder, Colorado , Wednesday, July 29, 2009 – John R. Tuttle, Inc. (JRTI) today introduced a new propeller-free small wind generator technology based on a revolutionary method for transducing wind energy into electrical energy that will produce electrical energy between 3 and 10 times cheaper than large wind energy turbines. The new towers JRTI announced are smaller, easier to erect, more reliable and safer in use, having no huge propellers to break off and cause damage. Simplicity, related to having eliminated rotating parts, allows for a greater than 60 year productive life. Importantly, the new wind tower technology has the ability to convert energy at higher wind speeds without a governor. Other advantages are its very low tower cost, low installation cost and virtually zero maintenance, allowing WindPipe implementations to reduce imported energy, reduce emissions (including greenhouse gases), all of which improve the technology lead of the USA in advanced energy technology.
The windpipe™ technology developed by JRTI has no turbine generator with shaft and bearings to wear out; no massive blades to break or to cause a safety hazard by falling off and striking objects and people, or to kill flying birds. Because of the simplicity of design, and elimination of rotating components, the new wind towers are expected to have three times the useful life of a wind turbine generator.
Besides producing cheaper electricity, one of the most compelling technology features of the new technology is its ability to convert energy at high wind speeds without a governor. The power produced by the wind is proportional to velocity cubed, whereas modern turbines govern the turbine propeller blades to provide constant power at velocities of about 22 mph, the top of Region 2, thus missing out on converting all wind energy with velocities over 22 mph, region 3, where most of the energy lies. Above 14 mph, the technology described herein is expected to produce energy from 3 to 10 times cheaper than turbines can—from $3.30 per MWh to $0.3 per MWh, compared to the $10 per MWh of modern turbine wind towers.
“The cheaper energy production, high wind velocity capability plus very low tower cost, low installation cost, very long lifespan, and virtually zero maintenance, make the new windpipe technology an important technology solution for reducing imported energy, reducing emissions, including greenhouse gases, improving energy efficiency in the USA and globally, and for improving the technology lead of the USA in advanced energy technology.”, according to John R. Tuttle, inventor of the technology, and President of JRTI.
